Antarctica doesn't have a national cuisine because it is only populated by visitors. There are no farms, you can't grow vegetables in the ground and the wildlife is all protected. But food is really important and Sara needs it to replace the energy she loses while trying to keep warm!

This morning, Sara got up extra early to bake fresh bread. She can't wait to share it with her friends! There's nothing quite like waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread. Yummy.

Antarctica is so cold that Sara can’t step outside without putting on all her layers, including her insulated boots, heavy waterproof jacket and thick trousers. Some days the weather is so bad no one is allowed to go outside at all!

But Sara and her friends make their own fun with chess tournaments, short filmmaking competitions and baking contests.

How do you make fun indoors, when you can't play outside?

Weather & Local Produce

Antartica has a polar climate and is extremely cold. There is lots of snow and ice. It is so cold that it isn't even safe to go outside without special protection.

There are no farms in Antarctica, but the cold sea is home to many different fish including tuna and swordfish. The fish are often caught, dried and then mixed with ice to make a traditional stew called Hoosh.

Wildlife info

Antarctica’s sub-zero temperatures are also inhospitable for most mammals. You can find penguins, seals and whales in Antarctica, but they spend most of their time on the ice, and rely on the sea for food, so they are not true continental inhabitants.

Physical Geography

The Antarctic is the earth’s southernmost continent. It is described as a polar desert and it's the coldest and driest continent in the world. Around 98% of Antarctica is covered with ice and it has several mountains. Antarctica is the only continent without an indigenous human population. Before it was discovered in 1820, no humans had ever set eyes on this icy continent. Antarctica is one of the few places in the world that can truly be described as having been discovered.
